August 20
ANN: You will see an introduction to MyStatLab (MSL) homework assignment called Chapter O Homework. It is due Monday, August 27. It is likely you will also have Section 1.1 Homework and Section 1.2 Homework due then as well. In class, I gave out the syllabus for Math 145. I showed off MyStatLab (MSL) for this class. Students and I introduced ourselves to each other. I covered many course policies, many of which you will see on the syllabus. Please read the syllabus. Please get registered with MSL as soon as you can. I also handed out the Math Resource Center handout that describes our tutoring center.
August 22
ANN: You will see an introduction to MyStatLab (MSL) homework assignment called Chapter O Homework. It is due Monday, August 27. Also, since we finished the class notes today, Section 1.1 Homework is due then as well. In class, I asked for questions over MSL but there were none. We then discussed the class notes for 1.1, finishing them. You are to do the corresponding MSL homework by its due date. We did not get to 1.2 so that MSL homework has been postponed.
August 27
ANN: Remember that Chapter O Homework and Section 1.1 Homework in MSL are due tonight, midnight. ANN: If you are not yet enrolled in MSL, remember that there is a temporary access available. Enroll and start the online homework as soon as possible. In class, we covered the class notes for 1.2 and the class notes for 1.3. We then started the class notes for 1.4, getting through example 1b. Remember that you should work on the MSL homework as soon after the class notes as possible, because the information is still fresh in your minds. There will be a separate MSL homework assignment for each section we cover.
August 29
[August 31 is the last day to drop for a full refund.] ANN: In MSL, you will see homework for sections 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 (all separate assignments) that are due Monday, Sep. 3. Remember this is Labor Day so if you are planning on coming to school to a computer lab to do the homework, do so before the weekend since the college will be closed on Monday. In class, we finished the class notes for 1.4, then completed the class notes for 1.5, and even started on the class notes for 1.6. For section 1.4, I handed out Bad sampling to be completed for next class. For section 1.6, we got through example 1 on page 1. We will continue from there next time. Since we did not finish section 1.6 this week, the MSL homework for it will not be due Monday.
September 3
No school for Labor Day
September 5
ANN: Exam 1 will cover 1.1-1.6 and 2.1-2.3. It is now set for Monday, Sep. 17. It will be 75 minutes and we will meet in MA 308, the computer classroom on the third floor. In MSL, you will find Chapter 1 Review Homework and Chapter 2 Review Homework to help you study. Because I want you to be done with the homework before you come take the exam, you will see that the MSL homework for sections 2.2 and 2.3 as well as the two review assignments (mentioned earlier) are due Sunday, Sep. 16. In class, I collected Bad sampling from last time. I told students of the late policy. If you turn in a paper assignment one class period late, it is worth full credit. If you turn it in after that, it will be worth half credit. It is still worthwhile to turn it in late so please take advantage of the policy. There is a cutoff in the middle of October, after which I will not take late work from the first half of the semester. This is explained in the syllabus. In class, we finished the class notes for 1.6. We then started the class notes for 2.1, starting the discussion of number 6 but not finishing it. Since we did not finish the notes for 2.1, I will postpone the due date for MSL 2.1 homework and it will be due with the others on Sunday, Sep. 16.
September 10
ANN: Exam 1 will cover 1.1-1.6 and 2.1-2.3. It is set for Monday, Sep. 17. It will be 75 minutes and we will meet in MA 308, the computer classroom on the third floor. In MSL, you will find Chapter 1 Review Homework and Chapter 2 Review Homework to help you study. Because I want you to be done with the homework before you come take the exam, you will see that the MSL homework for sections 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 as well as the two review assignments (mentioned earlier) are due Sunday, Sep. 16. [I had a mistake in the MSL due dates for 1.6 and 2.1 but it was pointed out to me by a student and I have since corrected it.] In class, we finished the class notes for 2.1. We then started the class notes for 2.2, getting through the mention of the worksheet at the top of page 4. I handed out the worksheet, called Data Displays, and asked students to complete, on their own before next class, numbers 1, 2, 3a and b, 5, and 7. We worked on the remainder of this worksheet, numbers 4a and b and 6 (incorrectly labeled as 6a), as a class. The worksheet will be turned in for a grade Wednesday.
September 12
ANN: Exam 1 will cover 1.1-1.6 and 2.1-2.3. It is set for Monday, Sep. 17. It will be 75 minutes and we will meet in MA 308, the computer classroom on the third floor. In MSL, you will find Chapter 1 Review Homework and Chapter 2 Review Homework to help you study. Because I want you to be done with the homework before you come take the exam, you will see that the MSL homework for sections 2.1, 2.2, and 2.3 as well as the two review assignments (mentioned earlier) are due Sunday, Sep. 16. In class, I reminded students that they needed titles and labels on all the data displays on the worksheet Data Displays (from last time) and gave a few minutes for people to check. I then collected the worksheet. We then covered the class notes for 2.3. I demonstrated how I would think through MSL questions involving multiple choice answers for data displays, like #11 or 12 in the MSL 2.2 homework. We also discussed the Ask My Instructor option under the Question Help button in the upper right corner of the homework screen. Use it to email me questions directly. The last thirty minutes of class was given to students to complete the section 2.3 worksheet Data Displays 2. Students worked together if they wanted. The worksheet will be collected Monday before the exam. Concerning number 1 on the worksheet, I posed this, "Number 2, which asks for a pie chart, shows the many parts (religions) out of a whole (the total population), as a pie chart should. Are the percentages given in number 1 "parts out of one whole"?"
September 17
I collected Data Displays 2. We took Exam 1.
September 19
ANN: I handed back a graded worksheet. I explained how I denote grades on paper worksheets. You will see a check mark by correct answers. If something is wrong, I try to denote where the issue is or scrawl a note and also you will see a negative number to the left of the page. At the bottom left of every page you will see a number that is the total points that were taken off on that page. All worksheets are worth ten points so you will see a score out of ten on the front page. I will record these grades in the Gradebook in MSL. In class, we covered the class notes for 3.1. We then started the class notes for 3.2, getting through page 2. I will be changing the due date for MSL section 3.2 homework since we did not finish those notes today. However, you should work on the MSL homework for section 3.1.
September 24
We finished the class notes for 3.2. I handed out Comparison of two data sets with the same mean to be done for next class. It will be collected. We then started the class notes for 3.4, getting through example 1 on page 2.
September 26
I collected Comparison of two data sets with the same mean from last class for section 3.2. We finished the class notes for 3.4. We started the class notes for 3.5, getting through example 3 on page 3. I handed out Effect of an outlier to be done (for section 3.5) for Monday. The MSL homework for 3.2 and 3.4 will be due Monday night, but section 3.5 MSL homework will not. However, you might find you can at least start it.
October 1
ANN: Exam 2 will cover chapters 3 and 4 and is set for Wednesday, October 10. We will meet in MA 308 to take it because it is a MSL exam. You are allowed (for this and all other exams) to bring a 3x5 notecard with any notes you like. You should spend some real time making it, including all you cannot remember as you do the work. You will see that we will have some MSL homework due dates curtailed because I want all homework done before you take the exam. So MSL 4.2 (possibly), 4.3, Chapter 3 Review and Chapter 4 Review homework assignments will be due Tuesday, October 9. In class, I collected Effect of an outlier and we finished the class notes for 3.5. We then started the class notes for 4.1, getting through page 5. You should not do the calculation of the correlation coefficient by hand, even if MSL says so. Use the StatCrunch or your calculator to do the heavy lifting. I will go over the StatCrunch instructions next time. They are on page 6 of the notes if you want to use them before that.
October 3
ANN: Exam 2 will cover chapters 3 and 4 and is set for Wednesday, October 10. We will meet in MA 308 to take it because it is a MSL exam. You are allowed (for this and all other exams) to bring a 3x5 notecard with any notes you like. You should spend some real time making it, including all you cannot remember as you do the work. You will see that we will have some MSL homework due dates curtailed because I want all homework done before you take the exam. So MSL 4.2, 4.3, Chapter 3 Review and Chapter 4 Review homework assignments will be due Tuesday, October 9. In class, we finished the class notes for 4.1. I handed out Regression and correlation which is due Monday. We then started the class notes for 4.2, getting through the mention of the worksheet Linear regression on your calculator (TI-82, 83, 84, 85, 86) at the top of page 5. I will not collect this worksheet; it is merely for reference. We did the procedures it covers together in class for example 4a.
October 8
ANN: Exam 2 will cover chapters 3 and 4 and is set for Wednesday, October 10. We will meet in MA 308 to take it because it is a MSL exam. You are allowed (for this and all other exams) to bring a 3x5 notecard with any notes you like. Remember that MSL 4.2, 4.3, Chapter 3 Review and Chapter 4 Review homework assignments will be due Tuesday, October 9 at midnight. In class, I collected Regression and correlation and we finished the class notes for 4.2, We then covered the class notes for 4.3.
October 10
ANN: All late work from weeks 1-8 including MSL homework and paper worksheets is due by Monday, October 15. After that date, any missed work will be counted as a 0. In class, we took Exam 2. See syllabus on details for make-ups and look in your email for a message from me.
October 15
We started the discussion of the class notes for 5.1, getting through example 7.
October 17
We finished the discussion of the class notes for 5.1. We then started to cover the class notes for 5.2, getting through example 4d. We did example 4d by using the idea of "probability equals number of successes divided by number of possibilities". A student asked why, when she did the formula on page 5, she got a different answer. But we were at the very end of class, so I asked students to all do the same and we will talk Monday. After several people had left, we discovered that the work on the board was wrong because we added the number of successes incorrectly. We will fix it Monday. I handed out Counting Problems Involving "OR" which is due Monday. Notice the worksheet asks only for the number of "successes" and not full probabilities. I do this to simplify what is needed and you can focus on how events overlap or do not overlap.
October 22
I collected Counting Problems Involving "OR". We had to revisit example 4d as we had the wrong numerator on the board. We discussed it and also looked at the student's question from last time. We continued the class notes for 5.2, finishing them. We then started the class notes for 5.3, getting through example 4.
October 24
We continued the class notes for 5.3 to finish them. I handed out The difference between OR and AND which is due Monday. We started the class notes for 5.4, getting through example 3b.
October 29
Class cancelled due to sick day.
October 31
ANN: Exam 3 (chapters 5 and 6) is set tentatively for the week of Nov. 12. In class, I collected The difference between OR and AND and we worked to finish the class notes for 5.4.
November 5
ANN: Exam 3 (chapters 5 and 6) is set for Wed., Nov. 14. We will not have class that Monday, Nov. 12 because it's Veteran's Day. In class, we covered the class notes for 6.1. I handed out Expected Value and Standard Deviation of a Dart Game which is due Wednesday. You are asked to find this standard deviation by hand, using the table provided, but it is the last time you should do it by hand. On MSL, you should use the calculator as described in the notes, even if the instructions imply you should do it by hand. We started the discussion of the class notes for 6.2, getting through page 1.
November 7
ANN: Exam 3 (chapters 5 and 6) is set for Wed., Nov. 14. We will meet in MA 308. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard for any notes you like. We will not have class that Monday, Nov. 12 because it's Veteran's Day. You will notice that Sections 6.1 and 6.2 MSL homework will be due Monday but you have through Tuesday to complete the Chapters 5 and 6 Review Assignments in MSL. In class, I collected Expected Value and Standard Deviation of a Dart Game and we almost finished the class notes for 6.2, getting through the mention of the worksheet on page 6. I handed out this worksheet, Mean and Standard Deviation of a Binomial Distribution, and it will be collected on exam day, next Wed. We did not get to the concept of "unusual events" as it pertains to binomial experiments. So that topic will be struck from the homework and will not show up on the exam. We may have to cover it in later chapters but may skip it outright if we can.
November 12
No school for Veteran's Day
November 14
In class, I collected Mean and Standard Deviation of a Binomial Distribution and we took Exam 3. See syllabus on details for make-ups and look in your email for a message from me.
November 19
ANN: Our last exam will be over 7.1, 7.2, 8.1, and 8.2. It will be held Monday, December 10. We will meet in MA 308. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard. You will see some due dates curtailed to Sunday, Dec. 9. In class, we covered the class notes for 7.1. We worked on a worksheet called Normal distribution. Numbers 1-5 covered 7.1 material but numbers 6-11 covered 7.2 material. So we technically started the class notes for 7.2, which I handed out since it included the standard normal table needed for numbers 6-10. The worksheet was collected. After doing the worksheet in class, we did finish the 7.1 notes so that homework will be due this Monday.
November 21
[November 26 is the last day to drop and receive a grade of W instead of D or F.] No school November 21-23 for Thanksgiving
November 26
Class cancelled due to sickness. Sorry.
November 28
We covered the class notes for 7.2.
December 3
ANN: Our last exam will be over 7.1, 7.2, 8.1, and 8.2. It will be held Monday, December 10. We will meet in MA 308. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard. You will see some due dates curtailed to Sunday, Dec. 9. In class, we covered the class notes for 8.1.
December 5
ANN: Our last exam will be over 7.1, 7.2, 8.1, and 8.2. It will be held Monday, December 10. We will meet in MA 308. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard. You will see some due dates curtailed to Sunday, Dec. 9. In class, we covered the class notes for 8.2. I handed out and collected the worksheet Finding Probabilities Involving Sample Means and Proportions. As it happened, the class did not have time to complete page 3 so it was turned in with the understanding that you are not responsible for page 3.
December 10
We took Exam 4. See syllabus on details for make-ups and look in your email for a message from me.
December 12
Class cancelled to accomodate make-ups and school closures.
