Activities
August 21
ANN: You will see an introduction to MyStatLab (MSL) homework assignment called Chapter O Homework. It is due Monday, August 27. It is likely you will also have Section 1.1 Homework and Section 1.2 Homework due then as well. In class, I gave out the syllabus for Math 145. I showed off MyStatLab (MSL) for this class. Students and I introduced ourselves to each other. I covered many course policies, many of which you will see on the syllabus. Please read the syllabus. Please get registered with MSL as soon as you can. I also handed out the Math Resource Center handout that describes our tutoring center.
August 23
ANN: You will see an introduction to MyStatLab (MSL) homework assignment called Chapter O Homework. It is due Monday, August 27. Also, since we finished the class notes today, Section 1.1 Homework is due then as well. In class, I asked for questions over MSL but there were none. We then discussed the class notes for 1.1, very nearly finishing them. You are to do the corresponding MSL homework by its due date. We did not get quite enough time to discuss #6 in the notes so we will a bit next time, but it should not make a difference for the homework so please do it as planned. We did not get to 1.2 so that MSL homework has been postponed.
August 28
ANN: Remember that Chapter O Homework and Section 1.1 Homework in MSL were due last night, midnight. You can still do them for half credit so take advantage of that if you missed the due date. ANN: If you are not yet enrolled in MSL, remember that there is a temporary access available. Enroll and start the online homework as soon as possible. In class, we finished the class notes for 1.1 by wrapping up #6. We spent a bit of time talking through some 1.1 homework questions. We then covered the class notes for 1.2 and the class notes for 1.3. Remember that you should work on the MSL homework as soon after the class notes as possible, because the information is still fresh in your minds. There will be a separate MSL homework assignment for each section we cover.
August 30
[August 31 is the last day to drop for a full refund.] ANN: In MSL, you will see homework for sections 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, and 1.5 (all separate assignments) that are due Monday, Sep. 3. Remember this is Labor Day so if you are planning on coming to school to a computer lab to do the homework, do so before the weekend since the college will be closed on Monday. In class, we completed the class notes for 1.4, then completed the class notes for 1.5. For section 1.4, I handed out Bad sampling to be completed and turned in for next class.
September 4
ANN: Exam 1 will cover 1.1-1.6 and 2.1-2.3. It is now set for Tuesday, Sep. 18. It will be 75 minutes and we will meet in MA 308, the computer classroom on the third floor. In MSL, you will find Chapter 1 Review Homework and Chapter 2 Review Homework to help you study. In class, I collected Bad sampling from last time. I told students of the late policy. If you turn in a paper assignment one class period late, it is worth full credit. If you turn it in after that, it will be worth half credit. It is still worthwhile to turn it in late so please take advantage of the policy. There is a cutoff in the middle of October, after which I will not take late work from the first half of the semester. This is explained in the syllabus. We covered the class notes for 1.6. We then started the class notes for 2.1, getting through page 3. I will be adjusting the MSL due dates for chapter 2 and the two review assignments soon to align with the upcoming exam.
September 6
We finished the class notes for 2.1. We answered a quick question in MSL for the chapter 1 review assignment. We then started the class notes for 2.2, getting through the mention of the worksheet at the top of page 4. I handed out the worksheet, called Data Displays, and asked students to complete, on their own before next class, numbers 1, 2, 3a and b, and 7. We will work on the remainder as a class next time. The worksheet will be turned in for a grade Tuesday.
September 11
ANN: Exam 1 will cover 1.1-1.6 and 2.1-2.3. It is set for Tuesday, Sep. 18. It will be 75 minutes and we will meet in MA 308, the computer classroom on the third floor. In MSL, you will find Chapter 1 Review Homework and Chapter 2 Review Homework to help you study. In class, we finished the Data Displays worksheet, doing numbers 4a and b as well as 6 together as a whole class. I asked students to complete the worksheet including number 5. Students were encouraged to work together. It was then collected, one per person. Some will be turning it in next time, which makes Thursday the official due date. We wrapped up the class notes for 2.2, from page 4 where the worksheet is mentioned to the end. I demonstrated how I would think through MSL questions involving multiple choice answers for data displays, like #11 or 12 in the MSL 2.2 homework. We also discussed the Ask My Instructor option under the Question Help button in the upper right corner of the homework screen. Use it to email me questions directly. A student had a homework question so we talked through that as well.
September 13
ANN: Exam 1 will cover 1.1-1.6 and 2.1-2.3. It is set for Tuesday, Sep. 18. It will be 75 minutes and we will meet in MA 308, the computer classroom on the third floor. I collected left-over Data Displays worksheets from a few students. We then covered the class notes for 2.3. The remainder of class was given to students to complete the section 2.3 worksheet Data Displays 2. Students worked together if they wanted. The worksheet was collected. Concerning number 1 on the worksheet, I posed this, "Number 2, which asks for a pie chart, shows the many parts (religions) out of a whole (the total population), as a pie chart should. Are the percentages given in number 1 "parts out of one whole"?" Also, we discussed the answer to number 4. We said that there are too many data points for a stemplot; it would be data overload. Instead, we would want a histogram. I made myself available to MSL questions from students with any left-over time in class.
September 18
We took Exam 1. See syllabus on details for make-ups and look in your email for a message from me.
September 20
ANN: I handed back a graded worksheet. I explained how I denote grades on paper worksheets. You will see a check mark by correct answers. If something is wrong, I try to denote where the issue is or scrawl a note and also you will see a negative number to the left of the page. At the bottom left of every page you will see a number that is the total points that were taken off on that page. All worksheets are worth ten points so you will see a score out of ten on the front page. I will record these grades in the Gradebook in MSL. In class, we covered the class notes for 3.1.
September 25
We covered the class notes for 3.2. I handed out Comparison of two data sets with the same mean to be done for next class. It will be collected.
September 27
I collected Comparison of two data sets with the same meanfrom last class. We covered the class notes for 3.4.
October 2
Class cancelled due to instructor emergency.
October 4
ANN: Exam 2 will cover chapters 3 and 4 and is set for Tuesday, October 16. We will meet in NU 101 to take it because it is a MSL exam. You are allowed (for this and all other exams) to bring a 3x5 notecard with any notes you like. You should spend some real time making it, including all you cannot remember as you do the work. You will see Chapter 3 Review and Chapter 4 Review homework assignments will be due Monday, October 15 in addition to the section MSL assignments. In class, we covered the class notes for 3.5. I handed out Effect of an outlier to be done (for section 3.5) for Tuesday. We then started the class notes for 4.1, getting through page 3. You should not do the calculation of the correlation coefficient (page 4) by hand, even if MSL says so. Use the StatCrunch or your calculator to do the heavy lifting.
October 9
ANN: Exam 2 will cover chapters 3 and 4 and is set for Tuesday, October 16. We will meet in NU 101 to take it because it is a MSL exam. You are allowed (for this and all other exams) to bring a 3x5 notecard with any notes you like. You should spend some real time making it, including all you cannot remember as you do the work. You will see Chapter 3 Review and Chapter 4 Review homework assignments will be due Monday, October 15 in addition to the section MSL assignments. ANN: The last day for late work (MSL or paper worksheets) from weeks 1-8 is Tuesday, Oct. 16. After that point, I will not take late work from weeks 1-8 and you will be given a 0 for any missed work. In class, I collected Effect of an outlier (for section 3.5) from last time. We then finished the class notes for 4.1. I handed out Regression and correlation which is due Thursday. We then started the class notes for 4.2, getting through example 4b. I also handed out the worksheet Linear regression on your calculator (TI-82, 83, 84, 85, 86) at the top of page 5. I will not collect this worksheet; it is merely for reference. We did the procedures it covers together in class for example 4a.
October 11
ANN: Exam 2 will cover chapters 3 and 4 and is set for Tuesday, October 16. We will meet in NU 101 to take it because it is a MSL exam. You are allowed (for this and all other exams) to bring a 3x5 notecard with any notes you like. You should spend some real time making it, including all you cannot remember as you do the work. You will see Chapter 3 Review and Chapter 4 Review homework assignments will be due Monday, October 15 in addition to the section MSL assignments. In class, I collected Regression and correlation and we finished the class notes for 4.2, We then covered the class notes for 4.3. We then spent some time on a homework question but realized the question (number 3.2.36 in the MSL chapter 3 review homework) was mistakenly assigned and so will be removed.
October 16
We took Exam 2. See syllabus on details for make-ups and look in your email for a message from me.
October 18
We started the discussion of the class notes for 5.1, getting through example 7.
October 23
ANN: We will not have class Tues., Nov. 6. It is election day so I am taking a personal day to vote and be with my kids. I hope you vote too. In class, we finished the discussion of the class notes for 5.1. We then started to cover the class notes for 5.2, getting through page 5. I handed out Counting Problems Involving "OR" which is due Thursday. Notice the worksheet asks only for the number of "successes" and not full probabilities. I do this to simplify what is needed and you can focus on how events overlap or do not overlap.
October 25
I collected Counting Problems Involving "OR". We continued the class notes for 5.2, finishing them. We then started the class notes for 5.3, getting through example 2.
October 30
ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 5 and 6 is tentatively scheduled for the week of Nov. 12. Chapter 6 only has two sections so the exam will come quickly. ANN: We will not have class Tues., Nov. 6. It is election day so I am taking a personal day to vote and be with my kids. I hope you vote too. In class, we continued the class notes for 5.3, finishing them. I handed out The difference between OR and AND to be done for Thursday. There were wrong MSL due dates listed for sections 5.3 and 5.4, which I will rectify this afternoon.
November 1
ANN: We will not have class Tues., Nov. 6. It is election day so I am taking a personal day to vote and be with my kids. I hope you vote too. ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 5 and 6 is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 15. Chapter 6 only has two sections so the exam will come quickly. In class, I collected The difference between OR and AND and we worked on the class notes for 5.4, getting through example 7.
November 6
Class cancelled.
November 8
ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 5 and 6 is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 15. Remember you are allowed a 3x5 notecard for any notes you like. We will meet in NU 101 to take the exam. Also, notice how Section 6.2 and both Chapter Review assignments in MSL are due Wed., Nov. 14. In class, we finished the class notes for 5.4 and we covered the class notes for 6.1. I handed out Expected Value and Standard Deviation of a Dart Game which is due Tuesday. You are asked to find this standard deviation by hand, using the table provided, but it is the last time you should do it by hand. On MSL, you should use the calculator as described in the notes, even if the instructions imply you should do it by hand.
November 13
ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 5 and 6 is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 15. Remember you are allowed a 3x5 notecard for any notes you like. We will meet in NU 101 to take the exam. Also, notice how Section 6.2 and both Chapter Review assignments in MSL are due Wed., Nov. 14. In class, I collected Expected Value and Standard Deviation of a Dart Game and we almost finished the class notes for 6.2, getting through page 5. We did not get to the concepts of the mean and standard deviation of a binomial experiment or "unusual events" as it pertains to binomial experiments. So those topics will be struck from the homework and will not show up on the exam. We may have to cover it in later chapters but may skip it outright if we can.
November 15
Class cancelled due to school closure, weather.
November 20
We took Exam 2. See syllabus on details for make-ups and look in your email for a message from me.

November 27
ANN: Exam 4 will cover 7.1, 7.2, 8.1, and 8.2. We will meet in MA 308. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard for notes. We will have this exam on Tuesday, Dec. 11. That will be the last day we meet. If school is cancelled, we will simply move the test to that Thursday. In class, we covered the class notes for 7.1. We worked on a worksheet called Normal distribution. Numbers 1-5 covered 7.1 material but numbers 6-11 covered 7.2 material. So we technically started the class notes for 7.2, which I handed out since it included the standard normal table needed for numbers 6-10. The worksheet was collected. After doing the worksheet in class, we did finish the 7.1 notes so that homework will be due this Monday.
November 29
We covered the class notes for 7.2.
December 4

ANN: Exam 4 will cover 7.1, 7.2, 8.1, and 8.2. We will meet in MA 308. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard for notes. We will have this exam on Tuesday, Dec. 11. That will be the last day we meet. If school is cancelled, we will simply move the test to that Thursday. In class, we covered the class notes for 8.2. I handed out and collected the worksheet Finding Probabilities Involving Sample Means and Proportions. As it happened, the class did not have time to complete page 3 so it was turned in with the understanding that you are not responsible for number 2c.
December 11
We took Exam 4. See syllabus on details for make-ups and look in your email for a message from me.
December 13
Class cancelled to accomodate make-ups and school closures.
