ANN: You will see two assignments in MML that are due this upcoming Monday. They are "Chapter O Homework" which will cover the MML interface including how to enter answers and "Section 1.1 Homework" will cover the material we cover today and Wed. in class. The syllabus will explain how we will usually have MML due the Monday after the week we finish the notes in class. ANN: We will not have class Wed., Jan. 23. I have to cancel class; sorry for the inconvenience. School is also cancelled on Monday, Jan. 21 for MLK Day. In class, we introduced ourselves to each other and talked over some bits from the syllabus and class policies. I also handed out a handout with information from the math tutoring center. I wanted to cover some 1.1 material, so we cut the syllabus talk short and started the class notes for 1.1. We got through example 2 and will continue next time. After we finish the notes, I would expect you to try the homework in MML as soon as you can. However, its due date is set for Monday, Jan. 21 to give you some time, as the announcement earlier said.
January 16
ANN: We will not have class next week. Monday is MLK Day and I am taking Wednesday off. In class, I demonstrated how to find the Daily Log (where you are now) on www.stlmath.com. We finished the class notes for 1.1. We also covered all of the class notes for 1.2. Since we finished both sections of notes this week, they are both due in MML next Monday. Be sure to plan ahead if you need to come to campus for homework because the campus will be closed Monday.
January 21
No school: Dr. King Day
January 23
[January 25 is the last day for a full refund.] No class: Cancelled due to teacher sick day
January 28
ANN: As a general rule about MSL homework: You should start the MSL homework as soon after we start the notes in class as you can. You should work to have it finished a couple of days after we finish the notes in class. Usually, the due dates are set for the following Monday to give you some leeway but it is best to get it done as soon as you can. Remember, as discussed on the syllabus, you can submit MSL homework past the due date but there is a late penalty. It is best to do the homework on time but the late policy lets you submit a few assignments late without any real damage to your overall grade. In class, we covered the class notes for 1.3. We covered the class notes for 1.4. I handed out Bad sampling, which is due Wednesday.
January 30
School was closed due to weather. We will amend the schedule and carry on next week.
February 4
ANN: Exam 1 will cover 1.1-1.5 and 2.1-2.3. It is set for Wed., Feb. 13. We will meet in MA 308 to take a 75-minute MSL exam. Notice that due dates for MSL homework assignments for 2.2 and 2.3 are set for Tues., Feb. 12 so that you will do the homework before you come take the test. ANN: I explained the late policy for paper worksheets. You can turn in a paper worksheet late for credit. If you turn it in the next class period after it was collected, it will be taken for full credit. If you turn it in after that, it will be taken for half credit. ANN: I wanted to clarify my late penalty for MSL work. You are allowed to do MSL work late but it is worth half credit. However, the late penalty only applies to those problems that are done after the due date. So, if you do half a problem set before the due date and half after the due date, only those problems you do after the due date will have the late penalty deducted from the score. In class, I collected Bad sampling from last time. We covered the class notes for 1.5. We will be skipping the section 1.6 to make up for lost time. You are not responsible for it in homework or on the exam. We went on to start the class notes for 2.1, getting through page 5.
February 6
ANN: Exam 1 will cover 1.1-1.5 and 2.1-2.3. It is set for Wed., Feb. 13. We will meet in MA 308 to take a 75-minute MSL exam. Notice that due dates for MSL homework assignments for 2.2 and 2.3 are set for Tues., Feb. 12 so that you will do the homework before you come take the test. Also, you will see Chapter 1 Review Homework and Chapter 2 Review Homework are due then as well. They are designed to help you study for the exam. In class, we finished the class notes for 2.1. We then went on to start the class notes for 2.2, in part by working on the worksheet Data Displays. On this worksheet, we completed numbers 4-7 together as a whole class. I asked students to complete the remainder (numbers 1-3 and 8) to be turned in next class. Next time, we will finish the class notes for 2.2, starting on page 4.
February 11
ANN: Exam 1 will cover 1.1-1.5 and 2.1-2.3. It is set for Wed., Feb. 13. We will meet in MA 308 to take a 75-minute, MSL exam. Make sure you know your LC username and password as well as that for MSL. Notice that due dates for MSL homework assignments for 2.2 and 2.3 are set for Tues., Feb. 12 so that you will do the homework before you come take the test. Also, you will see Chapter 1 Review Homework and Chapter 2 Review Homework are due then as well. In class, I collected Data Displays. We then went on to finish the class notes for 2.2. We covered all of the class notes for 2.3. I handed out Data Displays 2 to be done for Wednesday. We had some time in class to work on that last worksheet.

February 20
We covered the class notes for 3.2. I handed out Comparison of two data sets with the same mean to be done for Monday.
February 25
ANN: Exam 2 is coming up after 4.3 which is a short section. I will finalize the schedule and tell you shortly but be aware that the exam may be the class period right before or after Spring Break. In class, I collected Comparison of two data sets with the same mean and we then covered the class notes for 3.4. (We skip 3.3 in Math 145.)
February 27
ANN: Exam 2 will cover 3.1, 3.2, 3.4, 3.5, and 4.1-4.3. We will have it Monday, March 18 to give us time to get there. We will meet in MA 308 for the 75-minute MSL exam. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard (front and back) to write any notes you want. In class, I collected Comparison of two data sets with the same mean and we then covered the class notes for 3.5. I handed out Effect of an outlier to be done for next time. We then started the class notes for 4.1, getting through page 3, although I started to introduce the correlation coefficient on page 4. We will continue next time.
March 4
ANN: Mon., March 18 is a strict deadline for all work (paper or MML) collected in weeks 1-8. I will not accept late papers from chapter 4 or earlier after that date. We then covered the class notes for 4.3.
March 18
[March 11-15: No school: Spring Break] [March 18 is strict deadline for all late work from weeks 1-8.] We completed Exam 2. If you need to make it up, you will get an email from me but you should read the syllabus for details.
March 20
We started to cover the class notes for 5.1. We got through example 6. I did postpone the MSL homework due date even though you should be able to do quite a bit of the homework, if not all of it, after today's session. You should work on the homework if you have time.
March 25
We finished the class notes for 5.1. We then started the class notes for 5.2, getting through page 5. We completed the worksheet Probability: Addition Rule in pairs. It was collected. To make it up, come to my office or use your own coin and die. I handed out Counting Problems Involving "OR" to be done for Wednesday. I do have poker decks to loan out in case you need one. Come to my office to get a loaner deck if you want.
March 27
ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 5 and 6 (5.1-5.4, 6.1, 6.2) is set for Monday, April 8. We will meet in SC 412 and you are allowed a 3x5 notecard for any notes you want. In class, I collected extra copies of Probability: Addition Rule which we basically did last time but some people had to take it home to work out the details. I also collected Counting Problems Involving "OR" which was homework from last time. We then finished the class notes for 5.2. We started the class notes for 5.3, getting through page 3. I handed out Mutually exclusive and independent events which is to be completed for Monday. I may or may not collect it. We may just discuss it but I want you to come Monday with it as complete as you can. In fact, in class, we had 13 minutes to work on it and so we did. As a class, we came up with answers to numbers 1-3. I asked students to consider number 4 on the back on their own.
April 1
ANN: Exam 3 over chapter 5 (5.1-5.4) and 6.1 is set for Monday, April 8. During class, I decided to cut section 6.2 from this exam; we will add it to the next exam. We will meet in SC 412 and you are allowed a 3x5 notecard for any notes you want. Some MSL due dates are curtailed so it is all done by the time you take the exam. In class, we discussed the remainder of Mutually exclusive and independent events and it was not collected. We then finished the class notes for 5.3. I handed out The difference between OR and AND to be done for Wednesday. We started the class notes for 5.4, getting through example 2.
April 3
ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 5 and 6 (5.1-5.4, 6.1, 6.2) is set for Wednesday, April 10. During break, I decided to push back the exam and try to complete chapter 6 for the exam. I will have to change the room so that will be announced Monday. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard for any notes you want. Some MSL due dates are curtailed so it is all done by the time you take the exam. In class, I collected The difference between OR and AND. We then finished the class notes for 5.4. We started the class notes for 6.1, getting through page 3. We will not be doing the worksheet at the bottom of page 3. However, we will have another later in the section.
April 8
ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 5 and 6 (5.1-5.4, 6.1, 6.2) is set for Wednesday, April 10. We will meet in room MA 308. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard for any notes you want. Some MSL due dates are curtailed so it is all done by the time you take the exam. In class, we finished the class notes for 6.1. I handed out Expected Value and Standard Deviation of a Dart Game which is due Wednesday. We then mostly covered the class notes for 6.2. We got through page 5 but did not do examples 4c-e. However, we have done similar stuff to those so you may be able to figure them out using complements. We outright skipped pages 6 and 7 in the notes so that stuff (mean and standard deviation of binomial distributions and unusual events as it pertains to binomial experiments) will not be on the exam. I will strike it from the homework and Chapter 6 Review also. The worksheet mentioned on page 6 of the notes will be skipped, at least for now.
April 10
I collected Expected Value and Standard Deviation of a Dart Game. We took Exam 3. If you need to make it up, read the syllabus and expect an email from me.
April 15
In class, we covered the class notes for 7.1. We worked on a worksheet called Normal distribution. Numbers 1-5 covered 7.1 material but numbers 6-11 covered 7.2 material. So we technically started the class notes for 7.2, which I handed out since it included the standard normal table needed for numbers 6-10. The worksheet was collected. After doing the worksheet in class, we did finish the 7.1 notes so that MML homework will be due this upcoming Monday. The MML due date was erroneously set for today but I will change that.
April 17
We covered the class notes for 7.2. We then covered the class notes for 7.3.
April 22
[Monday, April 22 is the last day to drop and receive a W instead of a D or F.] ANN: The drop date is today, Monday, April 22. If you are going to get a D or F, it might be best to drop the course so you receive a W instead which does not affect your grade point average. See me if you have such concerns and we can look at it together. ANN: Exam 4 will cover 7.1-7.3, 8.1-8.2, 9.1-9.2, and possibly some chapter 10 material and will be held Monday, May 6. We will meet in MA 308. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard for notes. Some MSL due dates will be curtailed. If we do take the exam then, that will be the last day we meet. We do not have a comprehensive final in the class. In class, we covered the class notes for 8.1. We then started the class notes for 8.2, getting through page 2. I do have a worksheet for this section but will hand it out next time.
April 24
ANN: I have decided that Exam 4 will cover 7.1-7.3, 8.1-8.2, and 9.1-9.2 but not chapter 10 material. All else is the same as I said Monday. In class, we finished the class notes for 8.2. I handed out Finding Probabilities Involving Sample Means and Proportions which is due Monday. We then went on to start the class notes for 9.1, getting through page 4. We will continue next time.
April 29
ANN: All late paper or MML work is due by Mon., May 6. ANN: Exam 4 will cover 7.1-7.3, 8.1-8.2, and 9.1-9.2 and will be held Monday, May 6. We will meet in MA 308. You are allowed a 3x5 notecard for notes. Some MSL due dates will be curtailed. That will be the last day we meet. In class, I collected Finding Probabilities Involving Sample Means and Proportions and we finished the class notes for 9.1. I handed out Confidence Level and Interval Length to be done for Wednesday. We then started the class notes for 9.2, getting through example 3.
May 1

May 6
ANN: Today is the last day for any late work. In class, we took Exam 4. It must be made up by Wednesday of this week. The time period is curtailed so I can figure grades.
May 8
Class reserved for testing in case of cancellation on May 7. See syllabus.
