January 15
ANN: You will see two assignments in MSL that are due this upcoming Tuesday. They are "Chapter O Homework" which will cover the MSL interface including how to enter answers and "Section 1.1 Homework" which will cover the material we cover Thurs. in class. The syllabus will explain how we will usually have MSL due the Tuesday after the week we finish the notes in class. In class, we introduced ourselves to each other and talked over some bits from the syllabus and class policies. I also handed out a handout with information from the math tutoring center.
January 17
ANN: Remember that "Chapter O Homework" and "Section 1.1 Homework" are due in MML on Tuesday, Jan. 22. In class, I demonstrated the Daily Log (where you are now) for your class on www.stlmath.com. we discussed the the class notes for 1.1. We finished so that homework is, in fact, due Tuesday.
January 22
ANN: Remember that the MML homework is due tonight, midnight. In class, we covered all of the class notes for 1.2. We then covered all of the class notes for 1.3.
January 24
[January 25 is the last day for a full refund.] ANN: I moved the MSL Section 1.5 Homework due date up to Tuesday, Jan. 29 because we will cover it this week. In class, we covered the class notes for 1.4. I handed out Bad sampling, which is due Tuesday. We then covered the class notes for 1.5. Both of these MML homework assignments are due next Tuesday.
January 29
ANN: Exam 1 will cover 1.1-1.6 and 2.1-2.3. It is tentatively set for Tuesday, Feb. 12. We will meet in MA 308 for a 75-minute MSL exam. ANN: Remember that MSL homework assignments for 1.2-1.5 are all due tonight. You probably want to develop the habit of doing some MSL homework along the week as we do the notes so that you do not have an enormous task waiting for you each Tuesday night. ANN: I collected a worksheet today and I wanted to explain my late policy. If you turn a worksheet in during the class period after it was collected, it will be worth full credit. If you turn it in after that, it is worth half credit. It is still important to turn in assignments that are late. Students in the past have hurt their grade badly by ignoring the worksheets we do in class. In class, I collected Bad sampling. We then covered the class notes for 1.6. We went on to start the class notes for 2.1, getting through page 3. We will continue next time.
January 31
ANN: I wanted to clarify my late penalty for MSL work. You are allowed to do MSL work late but it is worth half credit. However, the late penalty only applies to those problems that are done after the due date. So, if you do half a problem set before the due date and half after the due date, only those problems you do after the due date will have the late penalty deducted from the score. These late penalties will not affect your overall grade much unless you do more than a few assignments late. ANN: I demonstrated the Daily Log (where you are now) on www.stlmath.com to remind you to come here when you miss class. In class, we finished the class notes for 2.1. We then started the class notes for 2.2, getting through page 3.
February 5
ANN: Exam 1 is set for Tues., Feb. 12. We will meet in MA 308 for a 75-minute MSL exam. You will see that MSL homework assignments for 2.2 and 2.3 as well as Chapter 1 Review Homework and Chapter 2 Review Homework are due Monday, Feb. 11 so that you are done with the homework when you come take the exam. The chapter review assignments are meant to help you study for the exam. In class, we finished the class notes for 2.2, in part by working on the worksheet Data Displays. On this worksheet, we completed numbers 4-7 together in small groups and as a whole class. I asked students to complete the remainder (numbers 1-3 and 8) to be turned in next class. We spent the last 25 minutes for students who wanted to stay and work on that worksheet.
February 7

We then finished the class notes for 5.2. We started the class notes for 5.3, getting through example 4. I handed out Mutually exclusive and independent events which is to be completed for Tuesday. I may or may not collect it. In fact, in class, we had some minutes to work on it and so we did. As a class, we came up with answers to numbers 1-3. I asked students to consider number 4 on the back on their own. Also, if you are still struggling with numbers 1-3, do some of those again.
April 2
ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 5 and 6 (5.1-5.4, 6.1) is set for Tuesday, April 9. I decided to cut section 6.2 from this exam; we will add it to the next exam. We will meet in MA 308 and you are allowed a 3x5 notecard for any notes you want. There will be some curtailed MSL due dates that will come due the night before, Monday at midnight. ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 5 and 6 (5.1-5.4, 6.1, 6.2) is set for Thursday, April 11. I had decided to cut section 6.2 from this exam but instead, we are moving it back one day. We will now meet in SC 412 and you are still allowed a 3x5 notecard for any notes you want. There will be some curtailed MSL due dates that will come due the night before, Wednesday at midnight. ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 5 and 6 (5.1-5.4, 6.1, 6.2) is set for Thursday, April 11. We will meet in SC 412 and you are allowed a 3x5 notecard for any notes you want. There will be some curtailed MSL due dates that will come due the night before, Wednesday at midnight. In class, we finished the class notes for 6.1. I handed out Expected Value and Standard Deviation of a Dart Game which is due Thursday. We then mostly covered the class notes for 6.2. We got through page 4. We did not do examples 4c-e. However, we have done similar stuff to those so you may be able to figure them out using complements. We outright skipped pages 6 and 7 in the notes so that stuff (mean and standard deviation of binomial distributions and unusual events as it pertains to binomial experiments) will not be on the exam. I have struck it from the homework and Chapter 6 Review also. The worksheet mentioned on page 6 of the notes will be skipped, at least for now. I mentioned that I had wanted to cover example 5 using StatCrunch but had no time. Since it is so very useful, I suggest you use the notes to explore how StatCrunch does these probabilities.
April 11
I collected Expected Value and Standard Deviation of a Dart Game. We took Exam 3. If you need to make it up, read the syllabus and expect an email from me.
April 16
In class, we covered the class notes for 7.1. We worked on a worksheet called Normal distribution. Numbers 1-5 covered 7.1 material but numbers 6-11 covered 7.2 material. So we technically started the class notes for 7.2, which I handed out since it included the standard normal table needed for numbers 6-10. The worksheet was collected. After doing the worksheet in class, we did finish the 7.1 notes so that MML homework will be due this upcoming Tuesday.
April 18
We covered the class notes for 7.2. We then covered the class notes for 7.3.
April 23

You are allowed a 3x5 notecard for notes. Some MSL due dates will be curtailed. If we do take the exam then, that will be the last day we meet. We do not have a comprehensive final in the class. In class, we covered the class notes for 8.1. We then started the class notes for 8.2, getting through example 3. I do have a worksheet for this section but will hand it out next time.
