[Monday, January 16 is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the college is closed.] ANN: Chapter O Homework in MyMathLab (MML) will be due this upcoming Tuesday, January 24. In class, students introduced themselves and I introduced the class with several policies and class details. I handed out the syllabus and we looked through the main points. You should read it thoroughly soon. You need to get MyMathLab (MML) set up as well; you will see instructions under MyMathLab and on the syllabus. I did a brief demonstration of my Website www.stlmath.com and the MML homework.

ANN: Chapter O Homework in MyMathLab (MML) will be due this upcoming Tuesday, January 24. Get MML set up as soon as you can if you have not. ANN: Exam 1 will be over chapters 1-3 but chapters 1 and 2 have four sections (that we cover) between them. In class, I handed out the handout for our Math Resource Center which is our math tutoring location on campus. We then started the Class Notes for 1.4, getting through example 4. There is a worksheet attached to these Notes (if you got it in class); it will be collected next week. If you did not get Notes from me, get the worksheet under Assorted Handouts and Tutorials.
Jan. 24
ANN: Chapter O Homework in MyMathLab (MML) will be due tonight at midnight, January 24. Two more MML assignments will come due next Tuesday so keep up with the online homework. In class, we finished the Class Notes for 1.4. The worksheet Manipulating Complex Numbers 3, attached to the Notes as given in class, will be collected Thursday. If you need the worksheet, get it under Assorted Handouts and Tutorials. We then started the Class Notes for 2.2, getting through page 1.
Jan. 26
[Friday, January 27 is the last day to drop the class and receive a full refund.] ANN: One MML assignment is now late. You can still do it for half credit. Also, if you do most of the assignment on time and then need to do a few problems after the due date, only those problems done after the due date will be given half credit. You will have two more MML assignments (1.4 and 2.2) that come due Tuesday, Jan. 31. Paper worksheets that are turned in one class period after they are collected will be taken for full credit. After that, they are worth half credit too but can still be turned in. In class, I collected Manipulating Complex Numbers 3 and we finished the Class Notes for 2.2. The two worksheets from 2.2 should be looked at but will not be collected.

Mar. 2
ANN: Exam 2 will cover chapters 4 and 5 and is set for March 23, the week after Spring Break. ANN: Look over Exam 1 (you can Review it under the MML Gradebook) for harsh grading. If you have something you got marked wrong and want me to look at, tell me. In class, we started the Class Notes for 4.1, getting through example 9a. The 4.1 worksheet, Roots and intersections on your calculator, will be collected next time.
Mar. 7
I collected Roots and intersections on your calculator. We finished the Class Notes for 4.1 and covered the Class Notes for 4.2. The worksheet attached to 4.2 Notes, Linear regression on your calculator (TI-82, 83, 84, 85, 86), will not be collected and is for reference only. There is a video of me completing it under Assorted Handouts and Tutorials. We then started the Class Notes for 5.1, getting through page 2.
Mar. 9
I was ill and could not hold class. I want you to finish section 5.1
on your own. Here is a detailed plan for you. On Tuesday in class, we covered pages 1-2 of the Class Notes for 5.1 which introduces polynomial functions. You should do the worksheet Polynomial functions: End behavior mentioned at the top of page 3 of the Notes. We would have done it together in class. You will find it under Assorted Handouts and Tutorials on the Math 131 page on www.stlmath.com if you do not already have the Notes I handed out in class. That will give you the idea and proper notation for end behavior which is a major part of this section. Return to the Class Notes for 5.1 and complete the summary table on page 3; it will help you out in the future. You should then be able to complete examples 1 and 2 of the Notes (page 3). Read page 4 of the Notes and complete example 3 at the bottom of the page. For this example, find g(-5) and g(3) and see if they are equal to 0; this uses the definition directly above the example. If you already know the TABLE function on the calculator, use it but you do not have to as indicated in the thought bubble at the bottom of page 4. (The worksheet mentioned at the top of page 4 can be done for extra practice but will not be collected. Although, if you do it, I would be happy to check your work.) Pages 5 and 6 of the Class Notes for 5.1 covers the material that the author does in the videos "Author in Action: The zeros of a polynomial function" and "Finding a polynomial function from its zeros". Either complete the Notes first or watch the video first; but please do both. The videos I refer to are in MML. From the MML menu, select "Video & Resource Library". From there, you will enter chapter 5 and section 5.1 and tell it to search for Video. There are several videos but I have chosen only these two so your task is not too cumbersome. You could watch others if you choose but he does things we will not cover like transformations. You should then complete the MML Section 5.1 Homework as the due date will be March 21. I will adjust other due dates as needed later when I am feeling better. We will have to adjust the exam schedule as well but I will deal with that later.
Mar. 21
[Spring Break is Mon., March 13 through Fri., March 17. No school] ANN: Exam 2 will cover 4.1, 4.2, 5.1, and 5.5 and is set for Thursday, March 23. You will see two chapter review assignments in MML to help you prepare. Those and the Section 5.5 MML Homework assignments are due Wed., Mar. 22. You are allowed to use your Class Notes, calculator, and homework notebook during the exam. You must have at least 20% on every homework assignment (including the chapter review assignments) for the exam to open. We will use the computers in this room to take the MML exam. ANN: Late MML work from chapters 1-5 must be completed by Tuesday, March 28 at midnight. In class, we skipped section 5.2 (MML homework removed) and covered the Class Notes for 5.5. We completed the worksheet Rational functions: Vertical asymptotes together as part of the lecture. Another worksheet Rational Functions: Horizontal and Oblique Asymptotes is to be done for Thursday and will be collected.
