Jan. 21
ANN: You will see Chapter O (Orientation) Homework and Section 13.1 Homework assignments are both due on MML on Tuesday, Jan. 28. The first is an introductory assignment that will help familiarize you with the interface of MML. We will finish section 13.1 this week and so it will come due the following Tuesday. In class, I introduced the class by referring to the syllabus and mentioning a few extra tidbits. Read it and make sure you understand what is expected of you. I referenced the Math Resource Center which is our tutoring location and gave out a handout with their information. They are available online and in-person this semester. I talked about MyMathLab (MML) which is described on the syllabus. You should thoroughly read the syllabus and get MML set up before next class. Students completed First of Semester Quickie Survey so that I may know a bit of your histories. I handed out Diagnostic Questions for Math 116 to be completed for next class. It is just a quick check of review topics that will tell you how comfortable you feel with them. We started the Class Notes for 13.1, getting through example 2. I handed out two worksheets with these Notes. They are Graphing calculator basics and Things to know about your calculator to help you get started on the graphing calculators. I will collect Graphing calculator basics Thursday as your first graded paper worksheet. People who have TI84 calculators should follow instructions for the TI83 if no TI84 instructions are listed. With this exception in mind, you can skip paragraphs that talk about calculators other than yours. (I do have somewhat outdated instructions for the TI85 and 86 which are older models and very few people have them. I have crossed those paragraphs off for the copies I handed out.) If you do not have a calculator yet, you can get an app for your phone (preferably the TI app) or borrow a calculator at the Math Resource Center (CM 233) on the second floor.
Jan. 23
ANN: You will see Chapter O (Orientation) Homework and Section 13.1 Homework assignments are both due on MML on Tuesday, Jan. 28. ANN: Exam 1 will cover 13.1-13.7. ANN: I explained the late policy for paper worksheets. If you turn a paper worksheet in after I collect it at the beginning of class, you will receive a 2 point (out of 10) deduction. It is best to turn in papers on time. The last day I will take paper worksheets is the day of the exam when we test over that material. In class, I collected the 13.1 worksheet Graphing calculator basics. I collected the Diagnostic Questions for Math 116. We continued the Class Notes for 13.1, finishing them.
Jan. 28
ANN: You will see Chapter O (Orientation) Homework and Section 13.1 Homework assignments are both due on MML tonight at midnight. ANN: I explained the late policy for worksheets. If you turn in a worksheet after I collect it at the beginning of class, the grade will start at 8/10 after a late penalty. If you are absent when a worksheet is due, email me a picture of it to get full credit and then turn in the paper when you return. ANN: Please do not use Messages in Blackboard; email me at soleary@lc.edu instead. In class, we worked through the Class Notes for 13.2. We discussed Tips for factoring trinomials of the form x^2 + bx + c and Rules for Divisibility that were handed out with the 13.2 Notes. Students then completed and I collected PairDoThis: Factoring trinomials which is mentioned on page 4 of the Notes.
Jan. 30
[January 31 is the last day to drop and receive a full refund.] I handed back the graded but unrecorded Diagnostic Questions for Math 116. For the most part, students did well on most problems. Be sure to ask questions as they arise. In class, we started on the Class Notes for 13.3/13.4 (combined). The majority of our time was spent working on the worksheets. I did cover the definition of a perfect square trinomial at the bottom of page 1 of the Notes, but then we went on to cover two of the four-part worksheet series (stapled together and handed out in class). We started with Factoring trinomials: Part 1: Introduction, Factoring by grouping, and A-C Method which is actually covered in 13.4 in the book. The A-C method is what the book calls "factoring by grouping" in section 13.4. On this worksheet, we discussed pages 1, 2, and 4, leaving pages 3, 5, and 6 as extra practice and reading if you need. I suggest reading the worksheet aloud. We then covered Factoring trinomials: Part 2: Reverse FOIL Method which is covered in section 13.3 in the book, calling it "trial and error". On this worksheet, we covered pages 1 and 3 leaving page 4 as practice and page 2 for reading on your own if needed. We will continue next time. We will cover another method next time (with the worksheet Factoring trinomials: Part 3: Cross-product method and Wrap-up) and there is a fourth in the packet I handed out called Factoring trinomials: Part 4: Upside Down method. It is up to you if you want to look at that method.
Feb. 4
ANN: As a reminder, you can do late MML work for half credit. There is a strict deadline of March 31. In class, we finished our work on the Class Notes for 13.3/13.4 (combined). We covered the last method we will discuss together (with the worksheet Factoring trinomials: Part 3: Cross-product method and Wrap-up). We completed the Class Notes for 13.3/13.4 and students then completed PairDoThis: Factoring trinomials 2. We went on to start the Class Notes for 13.5, getting through page 4.

Particularly, look for places where you rounded badly and got the problem marked completely wrong or you simply mistyped something. Tell me and I will see if I can give you points back. I may also give you partial credit for partially factored answers. ANN: Look for an email from me (to your LC email address) when LC says college is closed or we have a remote work day due to weather. I may opt to hold a Zoom meeting so we do not fall behind.
