Jan. 17
[Monday, January 16 is Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and the college is closed.] ANN: Chapter O Homework in MyMathLab (MML) will be due this upcoming Tuesday, January 24. In class, students introduced themselves and I introduced the class with several policies and class details. I handed out the syllabus and we looked through the main points. You should read it thoroughly soon. You need to get MyMathLab (MML) set up as well; you will see instructions under MyMathLab and on the syllabus. I did a brief demonstration of my Website www.stlmath.com and the MML homework. I handed out the handout for our Math Resource Center which is our math tutoring location on campus.
Jan. 19
ANN: Chapter O Homework in MyMathLab (MML) will be due this upcoming Tuesday, January 24. In class, we started the Class Notes for 1.1, getting through example 5.
Jan. 24
ANN: Chapter O Homework in MyMathLab (MML) will be due tonight at midnight, January 24. Two more MML assignments will come due next Tuesday so keep up with the online homework. In class, we finished the Class Notes for 1.1. We then started the Class Notes for 1.2, getting through page 1. A worksheet is attached to these Notes but do not worry about it for now.
Jan. 26
[Friday, January 27 is the last day to drop the class and receive a full refund.] ANN: One MML assignment is now past due. You can still do it for half credit. Also, if you do most of the assignment on time and then need to do a few problems after the due date, only those problems done after the due date will be given half credit. You will have two more MML assignments (1.1 and 1.2) that come due Tuesday, Jan. 31. Paper worksheets that are turned in one class period after they are collected will be taken for full credit. After that, they are worth half credit too but can still be turned in. In class, we finished the Class Notes for 1.2. I asked students to complete questions 1a, 2a, and 3a on the worksheet Magical Math Puzzles. We will discuss and complete it next time. We started the discussion of the Class Notes for 1.3, getting through page 1. This section also has a worksheet which will probably be collected next Thursday.
Jan. 31
We discussed the worksheet Magical Math Puzzles from 1.2. I skipped number 3c (but did do number 4) and did not collect it after all. We then went on to finish the Class Notes for 1.3. The worksheet Carchip worksheet will be collected next time. It is good practice for making estimates from graphs. We then went on to start the Class Notes for 2.1, getting through page 1. This set of Notes has a chapter-wide reference sheet you can complete as we talk through the chapter and a worksheet that will be collected (but not yet).
Feb. 2
ANN: We will not have class Thursday, Feb. 9. ANN: Exam 1 is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 16. It will cover chapters 1 and 2. You will see two chapter review assignments in MML to help you prepare. You are allowed to use your Class Notes, calculator, and homework notebook during the exam. You must have 20% on every homework assignment (including the chapter review assignments) for the exam to open. We will meet in room MA 308 to take the MML exam. In class, I collected the Carchip worksheet and we finished the Class Notes for 2.1. You should keep the reference sheet at the end of these Notes available so you can update it as we progress through chapter 2. The 2.1 worksheet, Sets introduction, will be collected Tuesday. We then started the Class Notes for 2.2, getting through page 1.
Feb. 7
ANN: We will not have class Thursday, Feb. 9. ANN: Remember you can do MML and paper worksheets late for half-credit. ANN: Exam 1 is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 16. In class, I collected Sets introduction and we finished the Class Notes for 2.2. We then started the Class Notes for 2.3, getting through page 2. Do not forget about the Reference Sheet for chapter 2 at the end of the 2.1 Notes.
Feb. 9
Class cancelled due to teacher absence.
Feb. 14
ANN: Exam 1 is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 16. It will cover chapters 1 and 2. You will see two chapter review assignments in MML to help you prepare. You are allowed to use your Class Notes, calculator, and homework notebook during the exam. You must have 20% on every homework assignment (including the chapter review assignments) for the exam to open. We will meet in room MA 308 to take the MML exam. Be sure you know how to log-in to the LC system and MML. You will see Section 2.3 Homework and the two Chapter Review Homework assignments are all due Wed., Feb. 15 as they need to be done before you come to take the exam. In class, we finished the Class Notes for 2.3.
Feb. 16
We took Exam 1. If you missed, look for an email from me. You will need to make up the exam within one week.
Feb. 21
ANN: Our next exam is over 3.1-3.4, which should come around March 9. ANN: Exam 1 had an overall average of 82% so that is good. Look over Exam 1 (you can Review it under the MML Gradebook) for harsh grading. If you have something you got marked wrong and want me to look at, tell me. In class, we started the Class Notes for 3.1, getting through page 3. The last page of these Notes is a reference sheet to be completed as we work our way through chapter 3. The worksheet Logic Introduction will be assigned next class to be turned in the following class.
Feb. 23
We finished the Class Notes for 3.1. The worksheet Logic Introduction will be collected Tuesday.

I was ill and could not hold class. In
lieu of a lecture, please watch the videos I have
available on the Class Notes page for Math 138 on
www.stlmath.com. The 3.3 Class Notes video should be
watched from time 23:40 to 36:20. We started those
Notes last time in class so you need only watch that
part of the video to finish the 3.3 Notes. Then
please watch the entire 3.4 Class Notes video. Since
I made the video, I did add a worksheet at the end
of these Notes. Please do the worksheet "Verifying Arguments" and I will collect it Tuesday, March 21.
You will find it under Assorted Handouts and
Tutorials on the Math 138 page on www.stlmath.com. I
do plan on giving the exam Tues., March 21 as
planned. 
Mar. 21
[Spring Break is Mon., March 13 through Fri., March 17. No school] ANN: Late MML work from chapters 1-3 must be completed by Tuesday, March 28 at midnight. In class, I collected Verifying Arguments and we took Exam 2. If you missed, look for an email from me. You will need to make up the exam within one week.
Mar. 23
ANN: Check over your exam to look for harsh grading. Tell me of issues you want me to look at for possible points back. ANN: Exam 3 will be over chapters 12 and 13. In class, I collected Verifying Arguments (as I gave a grace day to turn it in last time) and we started the Class Notes for 12.1, getting through page 5.
Mar. 28
[All late work from chapters 1-3 must be turned in. I will not take late work (paper or MML) after March 28.] In class, we finished the Class Notes for 12.1 and then started the Class Notes for 12.2, getting through example 6. The 12.2 worksheet Supplemental Counting Problems will be collected the time after next. (I forgot to mention it in class.)
Mar. 30
We finished the Class Notes for 12.2 and I assigned the worksheet Supplemental Counting Problems to be done for next time. We then started the Class Notes for 12.3, getting through the definition of permutations on page 2. The worksheet Permutations and Combinations will be collected next Thursday. I did not mention it in class today.
Apr. 4
ANN: I may have to miss class some or all of the week of April 17 due to jury duty. I will find out for sure Sunday, April 16 and send you an email. I will keep emailing you through that week to keep you updated. If I need to miss class, you will be asked to watch the videos provided under Class Notes. In class, I collected Supplemental Counting Problems and we finished the Class Notes for 12.3. The worksheet Permutations and Combinations will be collected Thursday.

Apr. 11

You will see that some MML assignments will be due Mon., April 24. In class, we finished the Class Notes for 13.1 and then started the Class Notes for 13.2, getting through page 4.The 13.2 worksheet Counting Problems involving "OR" will be collected Thursday, April 13. Another worksheet attached to the 13.2 Notes, Probability: Addition Rule, is optional and will not be collected.

ANN: Exam 3 over chapters 12 and 13 is set for Tues., April 25. We will meet in room MA 308. You will use your Class Notes, homework notebook, and calculator. You will see that some MML assignments will be due Mon., April 24. ANN: I may have to miss class some or all of next week due to jury duty. I will find out for sure Sunday, April 16 and send you an email. I will keep emailing you through that week to keep you updated. I will also be available for emailed questions at least in the evening. If I need to miss, you will be completing the 13.3 and 13.4 Notes on your own as you watch the videos posted under Class Notes. You will use your Class Notes, homework notebook, and calculator. You will see that some MML assignments will be due Mon., April 24. In class, we worked through the Class Notes for 13.4.

ANN: Exam 4 over 8.1-8.3 is set for Tues., May 9. We will meet in room MA 308. You will use your Class Notes, homework notebook, and calculator. In class, we covered almost all of the Class Notes for 8.1, getting through example 8.

ANN: Exam 4 over 8.1-8.3 is set for Tues., May 9. We will meet in room MA 308. You will use your Class Notes, homework notebook, and calculator. We will not have class Thursday of next week. You have through May 12 to do late work. If you turn in a paper worksheet next week after Tuesday, please email it to me. In class, we finished the Class Notes for 8.1 and then covered the Class Notes for 8.2. (We had left example 9 to be done next time but I decided to cut it and the related problem in MML. So, we are done with the section.) The 8.2 worksheet Understanding Compound Interest Through Simple Interest will be collected next time.
May 4
ANN: Exam 4 over 8.1-8.3 is set for Tues., May 9. We will meet in room MA 308. You will use your Class Notes, homework notebook, and calculator. We will not have class Thursday of next week. You have through May 12 to do late work. If you turn in a paper worksheet next week after Tuesday, please email it to me. In class, I announced that we will skip the last example in 8.2 Notes so we are done with that section. I collected the 8.2 worksheet Understanding Compound Interest Through Simple Interest. We then covered the Class Notes for 8.3.
May 9
ANN: You have through May 12 for late work. If you turn a paper worksheet in later this week, send it through email. We took Exam 4. If you missed, you must email me if you want to take it. I will not set up a makeup automatically.
