January 17
ANN: You will see three assignments in MML that are due this upcoming Monday. They are "Chapter O (Orientation) Homework" which will cover the MML interface including how to enter answers, "Chapter 1 Skills Check Homework" which, like every chapter, will start us on the chapter by reviewing some needed pre-requisite skills, and "Section 1.1 Homework" will cover the material we cover today in class. [Turned out that we did not finish the 1.1 Class Notes today so that due date was extended to Jan. 29.] The syllabus will explain how we will usually have MML Homework due the Monday after the week we finish the notes in class. In class, we introduced ourselves to each other and talked over some bits from the syllabus (mainly MyMathLab (MML)) and class policies. I also handed out a handout with information from the math tutoring center. We used to tutor your class in the STEM Center on the third floor but they are mostly down in CM 233 this semester. I will announce it if that changes. I handed out a Greek Alphabet List because we will use them a lot. It is a nice reference to keep in the front of your notebook. I also handed out some handouts to be used as cheat sheets for derivatives and integrals. They are http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/pdf/Common_Derivatives_Integrals.pdf and http://integral-table.com/downloads/Basic-Integral-Table.pdf and http://integral-table.com/downloads/single-page-integral-table.pdf. These are resources that were not written by me so I do not house them on my Website. We started the Class Notes for 1.1, getting midway through example 3. We will continue next time.
January 22
Snow day, no school
January 24
[Friday, January 26 is the last day for a full refund.] ANN: Chapter O (Orientation) Homework and Chapter 1 Skills Check Homework were due this last Monday. They are still available for half credit. You will see Section 1.1 Homework was postponed to next Monday as we will be finishing the section this week. However, you should always get started on the Homework as soon after we start a section of Class Notes as the material is still fresh in your head. We were unable to finish Section 1.2 Class Notes this week so that Homework will be due Feb. 5. We got a good deal done today so start that Homework if you can. In class, we finished the Class Notes for 1.1 and started the Class Notes for 1.2, getting through page 6. We will finish next time.
January 29
ANN: In MML, Section 1.1 Homework is due tonight, midnight. Next Monday, expect to see Sections 1.2 and 1.4 Homework as well as Chapter 2 Skills Check Homework come due. We will skip section 1.3. ANN: When we finish a section of Class Notes one week, expect the related MML Section Homework to be due the following Monday, midnight. I will not be announcing individual due dates. ANN: You can do late MML work for half credit. In class, I handed out an additional page for 1.2 Class Notes to go after page 2. I amended the Class Notes for 1.2 as given; the new page is labeled 3 in this new version but 2.5 in the version I handed out today. We discussed the page and then carried on with the last two pages of the Notes. We are going to skip section 1.3 but I did show the definition of a direction field as it is mentioned in the 1.4 Notes. We then went on to start the Class Notes for 1.4, getting through using the online calculator to find, in example 2, y(pi) for the step size pi. The 1.4 worksheet Euler’s Method for Approximating Function Values is due next Monday; in class, I mentioned it only to say do not worry about it yet.
January 31
We completed the Class Notes for 1.4. The 1.4 worksheet Euler’s Method for Approximating Function Values is due next Monday. We then went on to cover the Class Notes for 2.1 and start the Class Notes for 2.2, getting through separating variables and setting up the integral we need on example 3. I mentioned that we will use partial fraction decomposition to move on from there. You can review it if you like. The handouts shown on the 2.1 Notes were given out on the first day of class. I handed out the first two pages of the handout http://tutorial.math.lamar.edu/pdf/Trig_Cheat_Sheet.pdf (not mentioned in Notes) so we would have trig identities.
February 5
ANN: Exam 1 will cover chapters 1 and 2. We will take it Mon., Feb. 26. Bring Class Notes, homework notebook, and calculator. You will see two Chapter Reviews in MML, one for each chapter. The material we finish the week before (likely sections 2.5 and 2.6 as well as the two chapter reviews) will be due Sun., Feb. 25. ANN: Due tonight in MML you will see Chapter 2 Skills Check Homework. ANN: You can do late MML work (past the due date) for half credit. You can turn in paper worksheets late with no penalty. There is a deadline midway through the semester concerning the first half semester of material; I will talk later about it. In class, I collected the 1.4 worksheet Euler’s Method for Approximating Function Values. We finished the Class Notes for 2.2 and then started the Class Notes for 2.3, getting through page 1. The 2.3 worksheet Separable and Linear Differential Equations Practice will be due the class period after we finish the 2.3 Notes, probably Mon., Feb. 12.

I collected the 2.6 worksheet Crazy differential equations for you to solve. We took Exam 1. If you missed, look for an email from me.
February 28
Class cancelled due to teacher sick day. I asked students to watch the 3.2 videos to complete the Class Notes for 3.2. Even though they are handwritten notes in the video, they follow along with the printed Notes here. The videos are listed under Class Notes.
March 4
ANN: You can do late MML work for half credit. You can turn in late paper worksheets for full credit. In class, I asked for questions over the 3.2 material; there were none and so we went on. I handed out copies of the Class Notes for 3.2 and a diff. eq. handout I found at http://integral-table.com/downloads/ODE-Summary.pdf. We covered the Class Notes for 3.3.
March 6
[March 11-15 is Spring Break. No school.] ANN: You can do late MML work for half credit. You can turn in late paper worksheets for full credit. However, there is a strict deadline of March 18. After Monday, March 18, you cannot do any late work from chapters 1-2. In class, we covered the Class Notes for 3.4. We then went on to start the Class Notes for 3.5, getting through page 2.

March 25
ANN: I am taking a personal day and cancelling class Monday, April 8 to witness the total solar eclipse. ANN: Exam 2 (3.1-3.6, 4.1-4.3) is set for Wed., April 3. You will see two chapter reviews in MML due April 2. As always, you are allowed to use the Notes, homework, and calculator on the exam. Notice there will be curtailed due dates (April 2) for the chapter reviews and Section 4.3 Homework whose Class Notes we will finish that Monday. In class, we finished the Class Notes for 3.6. We covered the Class Notes for 4.1.
March 27
We covered the Class Notes for 4.2. We also went over #7 in MML Homework as the cubic auxiliary equation is not factorable as the one for #8 will be. To find the roots, we used graphing and then polynomial long division. Here is a scan of the page of notes where we worked #7 for MML. (The 4.2 worksheet will explain a solution method for #8.) The 4.2 worksheet Solving Homogeneous Linear Equations with Real Roots will be due next Monday.

In class, I collected the 4.2 worksheet Solving Homogeneous Linear Equations with Real Roots and we covered the Class Notes for 4.3. At the beginning of class I spoke briefly about question 4 in the Chapter 3 Review in MML. I wanted to say that you could not use the formula for v(t) shown on page 2 of the 3.4 Notes as the object in the problem is going up and both gravity and air resistance are negative as they oppose the motion. You could solve the generic dv/dt formula as a linear equation (after making both terms for gravity and air resistance negative) which is what the book supposes you will do. If you do, you will notice that you will get a similar but different formula for v(t) shown here. (I just realized that the "t" at the very end of the formula in the exponent of e got cut off; do not forget it on your paper.)
April 3
